Sherlock and Watson

Hi guys! It has been forvever since I've had time to jog to our local library and check my e-mail, most imporatantly update you on the kitties. So I have an update for you at last! I was able to contact the shelter they are at, and was able to talk to a person who claims that they still have Sherlock but they have changed Traveler's name to Watson. Anyway, they are in the no-kill divison of the shelter and they are still up for adoption but have not been listed yet on the web page: http://www.edmondok.com/index.aspx?nid=883
Thank you all so much for your e-mails, posts and all you have done to help us get through this. It really means SO much to us.
I was able to talk with Oui Oui's Mom Paula, on Sunday, and she is such a kind hearted and wonderful person. We had a great chat and it was great to talk to someone who understands what we're going through and she is so willing to help (like all of you guys!). She is contacting the helpline, a free service that will allow her to talk to lawyers who can help us see where we stand legally and if what our landlady is doing is even legal. Since we live in a house and not an apartment, our next door neighbour has her own lease and the terms could be different from ours which is why she could be allowed to have her cats. While I don't know the exact terms of our next door neighbor's lease I do know that, from my understanding, she isn't really supposed to have cats either. In fact, it seems more or less like a bribe to me ( I could be wrong ), because she's known our landlady for a long time, it seems like she's just allowing her to keep her cats anyway. That seems unfair to me.. what do you think? I mean, the landlady knows she has cats and seems okay with it, but when it comes to us that's a different story. Okay, I'm getting a headache talking about all this unfairness but I haven't gotten to the rest yet. I think I will just ask our neighbor if she's allowed to have her cats or not to get a straight and clear idea.
Anyway, while I was talking with Paula yesterday she made a great suggestion. It would be a good idea to bring up to our landlady paying a deposit in order to keep the cats. It's a win-win situation: she will be ensured that the house stayes in good condition and any damages made by the cats while we are living there (which I'm sure would be minor damages) would be payed for.
My dad brought the idea up but our landlady seems very opposed and I'm getting really upset when I think about how unfair our landlady is being.
The up side is that our lease expires in June or July so we're looking around for places that accept cats. I haven't come across anything yet but June is a while from now so you never know what luck we might have. Realistically though, moving will be something that we will have to think about. Our income at the moment and my dad's new job sounds like we may have no choice but to stay living in the house we're renting. There is some hope though. I thought about it, and while our landlady doesn't allow any INSIDE pets in the home, it got me thinking that the cats could become "outside" cats. I thought, and thought and really thought about it all night long yesterday but came to the conclusion that it may not be such a great idea after all. I'm mostly concerned about the level of traffic in this particular area and the numbers of cars that speed by are frequent. Plus, Sherlock and Traveler have always been inside cats and it would take a lot of adjustment for them to get used to.
The last thing I want to point out is that they still haven't been adopted. I feel so sad when I think of my babies locked up in a cage waiting for Mommy to come take them home. We're thinking about paying a visit to the shelter later on and visiting them (I will take pictures for sure!)

Please forgive me for not visiting anyone yet. My computer time is running out and I need to get back home but I will try and visit as may of you as I can the next time I get a chance.

  2. We are so, so sorry that you are going through all of this. We can't even imagine. We are purring and praying that this will work out, and that you'll all be re-united. Hugs and much love, friends.

  3. Are you sure they're still there? I saw them up on the site the other day and then they took them down and Rumbles Mum called and was told they were adopted together. I hope for your sake you can get them back but PLEASE don't make them outdoor cats. I don't think they'd last through a hot summer, cold winter or bad storms. They've never been outside. Best of luck finding a new place. I can't understand why you can have as many guns and as much ammo as you want, but you can't have cats. That's sick.

  4. Like CK said, Rumbles mum called the shelter and was told they were adopted together. If that's not the case, we sure hope you could get them back. We're sorry your landlady is not being reasonable. We don't understand some humans.

  5. What a continuing and heartbreaking mess for you. I bet lots of folks would help with a moving fund if that would help.

  6. I'm just hoping we can help you bring your kitties home. I didn't know what to think of Traveler's name change, but I realize its their way of letting people know Sherlock & Traveler are a pair. That's a good thing. Thanks for all the nice things you said. You are a such a sweet person, your parents should be very proud!

  7. How would your landlady know you have 3 cats if you brought them back home and kept them? In my lease I only have 2 cats, but now I have 5 and there is no way for them to know how many I have.

  8. I really hope something can be done. My heart is breaking for you. It is just so wrong - Sherlock and Traveler are your family members, and that landlady... I don't have words for her that are printable!

  9. Does your landlady enter your house to check? If she doesn't maybe you could sneak the cats in and she won't even know. Well, there is of course the blog, but you could change their names in the blog... ;) If she does come to the house to inspect, you could hide Sherlock and Traveller in a room and if they are afraid of strangers, that's even better since they'll be very quiet.
I'm hoping for a good outcome with your landlady.

  10. Amazing how much help everyone is giving you! How sweet! I think I would ask the lady next door too. I would ask if the landlady knows about the cats, and if not I wouldn't tell the landlady. It would be sad to see another person in your situation if it came down to that. You probably made a good choice with not letting the cats stay outside... outdoor cats don't usually live very long. I really hope things turn out OK for you and for the kitties.

  11. Kathleen, I know how I would feel in your situation and my heart aches for you. It looks like you are getting very good advice, but is it possible they could have been adopted? There seems to be some confusion there!! If they have always been indoor cats, I really wouldn't make them live outside, especially on a busy road! I hope this can be resolved very soon xx

  12. We dropped by from Paula's and are annoyed by your landlady. I can't believe she's treating you and this other person openly in an unfair manner.

I think your landlady wants a higher deposit, which isn't surprising because there are really some people who are like that. I do hope that the problem gets resolved though. Your cats seem to be the victims of an inconsiderate person.

  16. Oh My, we are so Sorry to hear what you and your babies are going through. This is just heartbreaking. It would just break my heart if I had to give up just one of my babies ....., I wish there were something I could do to help....... I am glad that Paula is helping you. We are saying loud purrayerz to Ceiling Cat that you will be re-united with your babies and that old *itch will cut the crap!and stop being so un reasonable!:( If you are promising to repair any damages to the place (in a contract) put additional $ toward a deposit......... What's the problem?????
Is she "Discriminating" against you??, by not allowing you to have your cats, but yet allowing your neighbor to have hers......:\

I am so Sorry ~ Prayers that you are re-united with your babies and can keep them ~ ♥xo♥

  17. Glad you did not go with "outside kitty" idea.... It sounds too dangerous with traffic there. If they are adopted together as mentioned in above comment, it might be the best for them as it seems very hard to convince your landlady. We all want the best for our fur babies....
I hope things go well for kitties and you.

  18. Miss Kathleen - my mummy rang the shelter and asked about 'Sherlock and Watson' - the lady that answered said that they'd been adopted! She asked if they were adopted together and the lady on the phone said they had been?

Oh how confusing... they were listed on the shelter website - I posted the links to both their profiles on my blog - then the next day the links didn't work - that's why our mummy rang, to find out what happened...

  19. It may help to just say you are going to move even if you are not. The cost of getting a tenant is much more than keeping one if you pay the rent. Also. Are things really that tight in your area for rentals? Are you using an agent or looking in the paper. Sometimes it can help to ask a real estate professional for help.
Dad was in that biz back in the day.

  20. We don't get why your landlady is being so nasty about this. We hope she either nices up or that you find a bigger, better cheaper place with hot and cold running squirrels and birds...

  21. Kathleen, when did you talk to the shelter? Someone from there told Rumblemum on SATURDAY that they had been adopted that day together.

We hate this is happening to all of you, knowing it is very upsetting. Hugs.
